BOB MAY
(September 4, 1939 – January 18, 2009)
I first met Bob May on December 9th, 1990 at the LA Comic Book and Sci-Fi Convention. It's funny how things work out. I actually was at this show because the flyer was for a 25th Anniversary Tribute with Bill, Jonathan and Marta. Wow! I hadn't seen Jonathan or Marta before and I met Bill back in 1967. They also had a full size robot. I never saw one before. And they were going to project on BIG screen some of the episodes. All was great! Saw everything. I was leaving the show and winding my way through the dealer room where low and behold, there was Bob selling copied of his "Robot Memories". I stopped and said hello. I bought a copy and got my first Bob May autograph. He was such a nice guy. Very happy to talk and reminisce about the show. He was such a positive person and really seemed to enjoy meeting his fans. That never ended.
Below are a sampling of images I took of Bob over the years. Living in LA, I would see Bob at shows all the time. He and I joked that if nothing else, because some of the shows were very slow, that I'd always be there to buy an autograph so that the cost of travelling to the show was covered.
My fondest memory was after the October 2nd, 2004 Hollywood Collectors Show, Bob came over to my house for Dinner. I invited anyone at the show who wanted to come have dinner and meet with Bob. He was in great form. Told us lots of stories and we all had a terrific time.
Bob was always a bright spot at all these shows and I always enjoyed catching up with him. He will be very much missed.
